This month brings an incredibly special and exciting wine to Tutta Bella. As you know, for the past 15 years our wine list has focused on Italian varietals and imported wines. It’s a list we are proud of and celebrate daily.
However, living in a state that also produces some delicious wines, it’s hard at times to resist the urge to run with something Washington-made. As we grow and branch out, trying something new on the food side, we figured why not bend the rules a little with the wine as well?
So, here we have it – Tutta Bella’s first ever Washington Wine Feature. Love Bird Rosé from SoDo Cellar.
Run by the maker of Kerloo Wine, Ryan Crane, SoDo Cellars produces delicious local wines that celebrate the biodiversity of Washington state. Ryan has been recognized as one of the game-changing wine makers here in Washington by several national and local publications. Ryan started as a wine maker for a few local producers on a mission to create something unique.
“I was tasting a lot of wines that I felt didn’t have a sense of place,” Crane says. “I wanted to build a portfolio of wines that made you feel something versus just taste something.”
At the winery, Crane focuses on making wines in an old-fashioned style with some French Rhone valley influence – using whole cluster fermentation processes, gentle fruit treatment, foot stomping grapes, and picking vines by hand. His goal is to use the whole fruit to create depth and texture in the wines, truly celebrating Washington and the place we all live and love through wine.
Love Bird Rosé is a saignee style rosé. Saignee is a rosé method that uses the runoff from crushed red fruit. Typically, red fruits are “bled off” to concentrate flavors and color in red wines, as well as lower alcohol. The runoff, which is pristine free-run juice, is then used to produce top notch rosé wines. SoDo Love Bird is fermented at cool temperatures in stainless steel and made from a blend of Mourvèdre and Grenache.
